Real estate leaders announce multi-billion dollar projects

Leaders in real estate and development announced construction plans totaling hundreds of billions of dollars at "Meet the Real Estate Industry," a networking event presented by Professional Women in Construction (PWC) on June 28 at La Maganette Ristorante, NYC.

Dion C. Wilson, director, Office of Facilities Development Real Estate for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), explained that the Corporation's real estate inventory consists of 16 million square feet of space.

HHC's five-year capital investment plan includes modernization projects at Kings County Hospital, Queens Hospital, Bellevue Hospital Center, Coney Island Hospital Center, and Jacobi Medical Center. Wilson said that HHC, with the assistance of the NYC EDC, has undertaken real estate development projects which will produce rental income for HHC.

He further noted that "The HHC is committed to providing business opportunities for women and minority-owned businesses," and suggested that the audience visit HHC's website to learn of contracting opportunities.

Bruce Phillips, managing director, design and construction, Tishman Speyer Properties explained how TSP increased office occupancy to almost full capacity at Rockefeller Center and expanded Chrysler Center by 146,000 s/f and added a new glass facade by architect Philip Johnson. Current projects include the New York Times building and the Hearst Building, and TSP is about to undertake a new Citigroup building.

Anthony Giorgio, director of commodity sales with ConEdison Solutions, explained that the firm, "an unregulated energy services subsidiary of Con Edison," performs energy management services and sells electricity as a commodity. It offers incentives to buildings that take steps to achieve permanent load reduction.

Linda Johnson, manager, aviation business development programs, The Port Authority of NY & NJ, announced, "Aviation has a $1.7 billion capital construction program for 2005-07 which includes work to prepare for new large aircraft. In addition, we're working on several dynamic new projects including the $875 million new JetBlue terminal."

Naomi Davies, deputy director, Office of Construction Management, NYU, discussed the University's initiation of a five year capital program for renovation of facilities in the Washington Square area.

Susan Busciolano, assistant building manager overseeing operations for 245 Park Avenue, Brookfield Financial Properties, noted that "Brookfield pro-actively manages each property to maximize value, by maintaining its long-term lease profile with the highest credit quality tenants."
